Sometimes the Registry isn’t the right fit. Maybe your boy needs something more immediate, or maybe you’re simply exploring all your options. This page brings together rescues, sanctuaries, and established bachelor flocks across Nova Scotia and New Brunswick that may be able to help.

Shelby’s Animal Sanctuary
Lakeville, Nova Scotia
​Shelby’s Animal Sanctuary is a non-profit sanctuary located in Lakeville, Nova Scotia, dedicated to providing a permanent, safe home for waterfowl in need. Situated on 12 acres, the sanctuary features secure predator-proof enclosed runs for night sleeping, several acres currently being fenced for expansive roaming, and an upcoming custom pond in the works. For round-the-clock peace of mind, a dedicated livestock guardian dog is on duty at all times to protect the flock.
​Danyelle brings extensive hands-on experience and expertise to the sanctuary. Having recently returned to Canada from the US, she previously served as her region’s leading wild waterfowl rehabilitator – a passion and dedication that earned her multiple features on The Dodo. She continues her commitment to local wildlife protection as an active volunteer with Hope for Wildlife.
​As a non-profit organization, Shelby’s Animal Sanctuary charges no surrender fees to rehome a bird. However, as caring for waterfowl takes continuous effort and resources, monetary donations or contributions toward feed are always deeply appreciated to help maintain the facility and support the birds.

North Lake Rooster Rescue
North Lake, New Brunswick
Dave Keeping has spent years doing exactly what his name suggests – keeping roosters. His New Brunswick property is home to well over 100 roosters living together in one of the largest bachelor flocks in the region, and he still has room for more. People travel from across New Brunswick and as far as Nova Scotia and Quebec to bring their boys to Dave, and he never turns them away or asks for anything in return.
That kind of dedication doesn’t come cheap. If you’re reaching out to Dave about taking your rooster, please consider giving a donation when you drop your boy off at his farm- even just the cost of a bag of feed goes a long way when you’re caring for 100+ birds.
Dave’s work was featured on CBC a couple of years ago, and the rooster community is better for having him in it.

South Shore Rooster Rescue
Liverpool, Nova Scotia
Run by Leanne Arnott, South Shore Rooster Rescue gives roosters a safe place to land. Her 35+ boys free-range her acreage, helping control insects and enjoying the freedom to live out their lives safely and happily.
A $25 donation per rooster is required at drop-off to help cover the cost of caring for him. Your donation will cover several months of his feed and help Leanne continue to give him a safe, happy place to call home.
The Wallflower Collective
Grand Lake, New Brunswick
The Wallflower Collective was established in 2017 to provide a safe home for animals experiencing homelessness, neglect, or to prevent slaughter. They reside on 55 acres in Wuhrs Beach and have over 75 residents (mostly pigs) but they also have a bachelor flock and are able to take in disabled birds.
When dropping off a bird at The Wallflower Collective a monetary donation or a bag of feed is requested.
