Hi, I’m Krystal, the person behind The Rooster Registry. Some of you may already know me from Roots, Roost & Rafter, where I’ve spent the last few years sharing life with my flock and creating what is probably actually way too many chicken-related projects or from my beginner chicken keeping workshops, Feathered Fundamentals.
I’ve always had a soft spot for roosters. Actually, “soft spot” might be underselling it a bit. I built an entire chicken village so I could keep mine. Eleven coops later, I’ve accepted that I may not be the best person to define the word “reasonable.” If I could, I’d probably have a giant bachelor flock and spend my days collecting every unwanted rooster I could find. Unfortunately, space, budgets, and reality tend to have opinions about those kinds of plans. So instead, I started The Rooster Registry.
Like a lot of poultry keepers, I’ve seen firsthand how many roosters end up needing homes, good ones and “difficult” ones alike. Sometimes a town bylaw says they can’t stay. Sometimes neighbours complain. Sometimes a hatch gives you ten boys and two girls. Sometimes the flock dynamic just isn’t working anymore. Even the super friendly boys, the ones who follow you around, take treats gently, and happily accept cuddles, can find themselves looking for a new place to land.
Helping roosters has become something I’m pretty passionate about. They often get a reputation they don’t deserve, and over the years I’ve made it part of my mission to advocate for them whenever I can. Are they all rainbows and sunshine? No, sometimes they’re a pain in the butt. That doesn’t make me love them any less though.
The Rooster Registry itself is actually my newest project. The idea popped into my head on a Wednesday morning, I spent the next few days obsessively building it, had some chicken friends help me test it out, and by Monday it was live. Sometimes that’s how things happen around here. A problem needs solving, I get an idea, and before long I’ve accidentally created another project. My husband has learned that when I say, “I have an idea,” there’s a good chance a new website (or chicken coop) will exist by the end of the week.
The bottom line, though, is that the Rooster Registry exists because I can’t personally take in every rooster that needs a home. Trust me, I’d love to. Since I can’t keep them all, the next best thing is helping them find people who can.
